The core of martial arts training is respect and discipline. Respect begins the moment the students enter the dojo. It is reflected in the way they treat their senseis as well as the other students. They learn respect for the building in which they practice the great art of karate. Most importantly, they learn respect for other authority figures, such as parents and teachers.
Students are expected to conform to certain established rules of discipline and etiquette when training. Standards for promotion are high and require diligent, repetitive practice and concentration. The incentive system, with graduation to a higher belt rank as the reward, encourages students to keep training, thus establishing a habit of sticking with something they have started. This discipline invariably helps students with their school work because it develops strong work habits and goal setting skills. It also helps them cope with the trails and pressures of ordinary life.
Martial artists should be courteous, respectful, patient, and honest. These are values that are not specifically taught in most western sports, but they are basic rules of etiquette for the karate dojo as well as for life.
